The preferred runway is Runway 21 due to the availability of the ILS Procedure.
Pilots may request to land on Runway 03 if the tailwind componant is unfavourable. IFR arrivals will fly the instrument aprroach for Runway 21 and break off for a visual circle to land procedure.
ATC should offer the option for both runways and attempt to facilitate these requests where possible. It is therefore not uncommon for Biggin Hill to have Both Runway 03 and 21 in use at the same time.
Departing aircraft are to be given the Biggin Hill QNH prior to take-off.
Arriving aircraft below the transition level are to be given the Biggin Hill QNH.
Aircraft entering the aerodrome traffic circuit are to operate on the Biggin Hill QFE.
Biggin Hill QFE = Biggin Hill QNH - 20 hPa
6000 ft
By ATC.
Not Applicable.
AIR should co-ordinate with APC:
AIR should co-ordinate with Thames Director:
Om first contact, Departing aircraft should be asked which Runway they would prefer for departure. Runway 03 or Runway 21.
All IFR departure clearances from Biggin Hill must be co-ordinated with Thames Director. Thames may provide an initial altitude of 2400ft remaining outside of Controlled airspace or 3000ft if cleared to join controlled airspace.

TC Thames (Biggin Hill Conspicuity) | 7047* |
*This conspicuity code is only issued to aircraft under a basic/ or procedural service to show surrounding controllers equipped with a Radar, that these aircraft are being provided a service by Biggin Hill ATC.
RNAV1 equipped aircraft inbound from the ATS route structure (Airways) will be cleared by Terminal Control for the Biggin Hill Standard Arrival (STAR’s). Thames Director will clear RNAV1 Equipped arrivals to fly the Runway 21 transition. Non RNAV1 equipped arrivals will be provided vector‘s from JACKO or GODLU by Thames Director to establish on the glidepath for Runway 21. Thames Director may vector aircraft off the RNAV1 transition for efficiency.
If Runway 21 is in use, IFR arrivals will be vectored to establish on the Runway 21 glidepath and once established cleared to leave controlled airspace. Before leaving controlled airspace, radar service‘s are terminated by Thames Director and the aircraft will instructed to contact KB AIR/ APC.
If Runway 03 is in use, IFR Arrivals will vectored the same as Runway 21, however, will be cleared by KB AIR/APC to break off for a visual circle to land procedure for Runway 03.

ALKIN | 240/ Right | 2000ft only |
Any holding at ALKIN should be co-ordinated with Thames Director.
Arriving aircraft should be separated according to CAA Approach Wake Turbulence separation (This can be found in the XU Quickview)
Thames Director is contracted by Biggin Hill to provide approach control services and when online all approaches should be handled by them.
When Thames Director is offline, Biggin Hill APC may provide Procedural approach services.
Biggin Hill is located below LTMA Class A Controlled Airspace and adjacent to Both the London CTR and City CTR (Both class D)
Circuits are variable. Normally - LH on Runway 03, RH on Runway 21. Circuit height is at 1000 FT QFE or at Altitude 1600 FT QNH.
VFR Departures should be issued a Left/ Right turn out after departure with the Biggin Hill Conspicuity Squawk.
”G-ABCD, After departure Runway 21, right turn out, VFR, Squawk 7407”
Arrivals should be instructed to join overhead the mid-point of the Runway in use at 1000ft QFE to join left/ right downwind.
The following VRP’s are established for Biggin Hill:
Helicopters should use the standard fixed wing circuits and follow fixed wing departure/arrival procedures.
Biggin Hill is not equipped with Radar and therefore may only offer Basic/ Procedural service’s outside of controlled airspace.
