ATC Low Visibility Procedures are in force when:
The following spacing should be used for arrivals during LVPs:
Isle of Man QFE = QNH - 1 hPa
3000 ft
By ATC.
Airway clearances should be requested from Ronaldsway Radar (INT) with a Clearance request.
This clearance should then be issued by AIR using the following phraseology:
(Callsign), cleared to (Destination) via (Airway1), After Departure Left/Right turn on track (Fix), Climb (Initial FL2). Squawk (SSR Code)
1 - Airway: The airway should be the first airway filed in the pilots flight plan.
2 - Initial FL is always as per the standard agreement with Scottish Control shown below:
Airway | Level Agreement |
---|---|
Via L10 | ↑FL60 |
Via Y911 | ↑FL80 |
Pilots departing the Isle of Man should route via the standard departure routes shown in the table below:
Departing to | Via | Route |
---|---|---|
N | Direct | MIKEL/SLYDA |
NE | Direct | DCS |
E | Direct | VANIN |
SE | KELLY | L10 |
TIMIS | Q39 | |
SW | IOM | Y911 |
NW | IOM | L101 |
1 - Unless otherwise instructed by ATC, aircraft on the appropriate routes must establish on track by MIKEL/SLYDA.
CPDLC/ Datalink clearances are not used at the Isle of Man.
All stands are marked nose-in/push-back except Stand 3 which is self-manoeuvring.
Taxiways Delta and Charlie between holding point D1 and Runway 08/26 are available for use in daylight only
All departures require a release from Ronaldsway INT.
INT may add after departure intructions with the release.
INT: ”Logan 22AQ, After Departure, Left turn heading 180 degrees, Released”
Wake turbulence separation minima on departure shall be applied by measuring airborne times between successive aircraft. Take-off clearance may be issued with an allowance for the anticipated take-off run on the runway; however, the airborne time interval shall reflect a difference of at least the required time separation. ATC does not have the discretion to reduce wake turbulence separation minima.
CAA Departure seperation minima must be applied between departing aircraft. Departure separation minima can also be found within the XU Quickview.
All departures should be transferred to Ronaldsway INT when airborne before passing 2000ft.
If Ronaldsway INT is not offline departures should be transferred to:
North-West on L10 | South-East on L10 | South-West on Y911 |
---|---|---|
|
|
1.EGPX M CTR (PC MTMA) 2. EGTT N CTR (LAC North) |
If all of the above are offline, departures should be released to UNICOM.
INT will retain control of arriving aircraft until the aircraft passes 4nm DME, transfer of communication can occur prior to this point.
INT is responsible for the necessary spacing between inbound aircraft. The Air controller should monitor inbound aircraft to check that the correct spacing is being achieved.
Should any corrective action be required for arriving aircraft outside of 4nm DME, coordination should be effected between the AIR controller and INT.
The wake turbulence separation minima in the XU Quickview shall be applied to aircraft on final approach when:
(1) an aircraft is operating directly behind another aircraft at the same altitude or less than 1,000 ft below; or
(2) an aircraft is crossing behind another aircraft, at the same altitude or less than 1,000 ft below;
Unintentional missed approaches/ go-arounds should be coordinated with INT.
Missed approach procedures can be found in the UK AIP.
Ronaldsway Radar (INT) is responsible for aircraft within the Isle of Man CTR, CTA and RMA.
Scottish Control will descend Isle of Man inbounds to the standing agreement level via Standard inbound routes. Aircraft will be transferred by silent handover, unless other factors prevent this.
Approach from | Via | Route |
---|---|---|
N | Direct | MIKEL |
NE | DCS | IOM |
NW | L10 | SLYDA |
SE | L10 | KELLY |
M146 | LUSOD (See note) | |
SW | Y911 | IOM |
E | Direct | VANIN |
Note: If inbound traffic via M146 is required to hold it will hold at KELLY as per details in the Holding section.
Hold | Inbound Course/ Direction | Min Altitude/ Level |
---|---|---|
IOM | 082 / Right | 3000ft |
KELLY | 306 / Left | By ATC |
VANIN | 283/ Right | By ATC |
A minimum radar separation of 3nm can be applied within the Isle of Man CTR and CTA’s.
To be added.
The wake turbulence separation minima in the XU Quickview shall be applied to aircraft on final approach when:
(1) an aircraft is operating directly behind another aircraft at the same altitude or less than 1,000 ft below; or
(2) an aircraft is crossing behind another aircraft, at the same altitude or less than 1,000 ft below;
If a departure may conflict with any inbound arrivals, INT should pass amended after departure instructions to AIR.
Departures should be issued a climb up to the Standing Agreed level‘s with Scottish Control.

The Isle of Man CTR and CTA are class D controlled airspace.
Runway 08/ 26 : Flown to the south over the sea, not above 1000ft QFE.
Runway 03/ 21 : Flown to the south east over the sea, not above 1000ft QFE.
VFR Flights should route via Visual Reference points. Not above 2000ft QNH. ATC should endeavour to provide a higher altitude restriction due to flight over the sea and the safe gliding distance from land.
The following VRP’s have been established for the Isle of Man:
Special VFR clearances within the CTR/CTA, in IMC or at night, may be issued subject to traffic conditions and limitations by ATC.
There are no specific helicopter routes. Helicopters will conform with normal arrival and departure procedures. Specific parking instructions will be given approaching the runway threshold.
INT can provide UK Flight Information Services (UK FIS) within radar range outside of controlled airspace, Subject to controller workload.
