When flying around airbases, you will tend to hear slightly different calls on the radio to what you will be used to when flying to civilian airports.
Below we have created a mock exchange for a both a basic IFR and VFR flight where there are differences to flying at civilian airports
Phraseology between [..] could be omitted when not needed and may be based on the current situation or regulated by local procedures;
In the USA the term QNH can be replaced by the word Altimeter which is measured in inches of mercury.

In some countries, the term intial can be replaced by the terms run and brake
Tactical initial is flown at very low altitude and high speed until the brake point.
IFR will only need cancelling if the flight was originally IFR
ATC shall specify the pattern direction if it is different from published or when published on both sides.
TWR controller can impose actions such as: "Standby for brake, Brake at the beginning/end, extend downwind or orbit" when the situation requires.
After a go around a pilot may request a CLOSE pattern. This manoeuvre is used to enter directly onto downwind leg without passing through the initial point

According to local procedure, IFR clearance can be requested before start up
QRA is considered as IFR but doesn’t need start up and atc dep clearance. The “clearance” is given by the “Scramble Order” through tactical channels. Depending on local procedures or training purposes, the scramble order can be given by TWR controller.
Here an example:
TWR, GA01, Two-Ship, Alpha [or Tango] Scramble. | |||
GA01, TWR, Taxi to Rwy 21 [via (taxi instructions)], (Dep information). |
Then, same Phraseology as normal departing aircraft, but with priority over ALL traffic except “Emergency”

Fixed-wing VTOL military aircraft at airports where such operations are permitted may use the following additional expressions with the meaning given in the Right Column in the table below.
Conventional Landing | A landing, real or simulated, in which the nozzles are used to brake and in which the aircraft will make a deceleration run on the ground of approximately 5000 ft. In the case of non-directional nozzles, a conventional landing may require the entire runway and engagement of the barrier. |
Slow Landing | A normal landing (120 kts) with nozzle adjusted to intermediate position (normally 65°) characterised by a considerable ground run, interrupted by the braking energy of the nozzles. |
RVL (Rolling vertical landing) | Vertical landing with taxiing. A steep and slow approach (50 kts) followed by a short run on the ground, normally without the use of nozzle braking energy. |
Accel | A quick opening of the throttle to verify the correct response of the engine. It is always carried out before take-off but declared only in the event that a significant ground run is required. |
Translate | An expression used to indicate the flight of an aircraft mainly supported by jets, conducted over short distances between different landing areas. |
Press-up | Vertical landing and take-off on the same pad without the transition to flight supported by wings. |
Mini circuit | Manoeuvring in flight of an aircraft supported by jets associated with a press-up. |
Lift-off | Vertical take-off from a pitch followed by the transition to flight supported by wings. |
STO hop | A short take-off followed by a vertical landing with taxiing in the same direction. |
Pad | A concrete area for vertical take-off and landing, the surface of which is able to withstand the jetblast. |
Mexe | A pitch built with woven and prefabricated aluminium strips, in circle or square shape, the surface of which is able to withstand jetblast. |
On airports not equipped with ATIS the following items shall be communicated:
Instrumental approaches may also be requested from VFR flights for training.

After obtaining the relative bearing the tanker will instruct the receiver aircraft to assume a certain heading in order to position the aircraft "head on". The difference of relative bearing normally it will be divided between the two aircraft in order to reduce the offset gradually. In the example, the tanker and receiver are assumed to have 080 and 260 HDG respectively at the beginning of the procedure.
DURING THE RV, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPEAT THE OPERATION TO OBTAIN AN INCREASINGLY PRECISE “HEAD ON” APPROACH.
