An airfoil (American English) or aerofoil (British English) is a body shaped in such a way, that when moved through a fluid it produces an aerodynamic reaction perpendicular to its direction of motion named Lift, at the cost of a small resistance force named Drag.
Aerofoil surfaces include wings, tailplanes, fins, winglets, propeller blades and helicopter rotor blades.
An airofoil-shaped body moved through a fluid produces aerodynamic forces : lift and drag.
The objective of aerofoil design is to achieve the best compromise between lift and drag for the flight envelope in which it is intended to operate.
