¶ Introduction
The landing is defined as a touchdown to the surface from the hover
An approach is defined as the transition from an altitude to either a hover or to the surface.
The best technique to practice an approach and a landing is flying traffic patterns at approximately 500ft, 1000ft, or 1500ft maximum.'
¶ In practice
On final approach, at approximately 300ft AGL the helicopter should be on the correct ground track (or ground alignment) for the intended landing site, but the axis of the helicopter does not have to be aligned until about 100' AGL like the picture below:
Then:
- Select a suitable approach angle. 7 to 12 degrees can be considered a standard approach
- Initiate the approach by reducing the collective: the helicopter will begin to descend
- Keep straight by applying pedals
- apply aft cyclic to begin a reduction in the airspeed and to maintain a level attitude
* At approximately 25kts, before entering a hold, increase the collective slowly to avoid hitting the ground suddenly instead of making a hold
From the hold decrease the collective to land on the runway (approach to hover) or directly to a surface like a helipad (surface approach)
Never push the cyclic to make the helicopter descend, the collective is the first control to be used
