In this document, we use the following convention:
- IFR Pilot callsign is SAU1234.
- This is a flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle (LFPG) to New York JFK (KJFK).
- The sign 🛩️ / ✈️ before the text means: this is the aircraft pilot transmission. ( 🛩️ for VFR, ✈️ for IFR)
- The sign 📡 before the text means: this is the air traffic controller unit (ATC unit) transmission.
The ATC is the one that may start using the short call sign. Only thereafter, the pilot shall use it as well.
Reminder: An oceanic airspace has no radar coverage, pilots must report their positions to ATC in order to ensure separations.
Via North Alantic Track (NAT):

Usually at first position report, aircraft can request a SELCAL check, in order to check the accuracy of the system:
- ✈️SAU1234, request SELCAL check EP-AM

If the SELCAL check is negative, pilot and ATC may try again or declare SELCAL inoperative and monitor the frequency.
